10 practical tips for new dads
Becoming a new dad is scary. I was scared, and didn’t have much experience with babies, let alone new-borns.
But I am now reaching the one-and-a-half stage (yes, I made it this far!) and thought I would impart a few tips I would recommend to any new dad.
1. Master the Diaper Change
You’ll be doing this a lot, so get comfortable with it. Keep everything you need (wipes, diapers, creams) within arm's reach. And don’t forget: keep one hand on the baby at all times—newborns are squirmy!
2. Learn How to Use Baby Gear
From prams to car seats, baby swings, and bouncers, there’s a lot of gear. Watch videos or read manuals on how to properly use these items. It will save you a lot of time and headache to know how to put the baby into the car seas quickly and safely (and how to unfold a pram!).
3. Set Up a Feeding Schedule (When Possible)
Whether you’re bottle-feeding or supporting your partner with breastfeeding, setting a routine can help manage your time and ensure both parents are on the same page. It also helps with planning sleep and other activities.
4. Get to Know the Baby’s Cues
Babies can’t talk, but they communicate in other ways. Learn to recognize when your baby is hungry, tired, or needs a diaper change. Over time, you’ll start understanding their little signals.
5. Don’t Skip the Burping
After every feed, help your baby burp to prevent discomfort. It’s easy to forget, especially when you’re sleep-deprived, but it can make a huge difference in your baby’s comfort, which will in turn, help you.
6. Take Turns with Night Duties
Night time feedings and soothing can be exhausting. If possible, take turns with your partner so each of you can get some rest. Even a few hours of uninterrupted sleep can work wonders. We were bottle feeding from early on so I was able to help with the night feeds (but even if you’re not, you can help out with burping and putting the baby to sleep).
7. Stock Up on Essentials
Keep extra baby essentials on hand—diapers, wipes, formula, etc. You don’t want to be caught off guard, especially when your baby is running low on supplies. A well-stocked home helps you feel more prepared.
8. Take Advantage of Naptime
When your baby naps, use that time wisely! If you can, sneak in a nap yourself, or at least tackle small tasks around the house to keep things running smoothly. You’ll feel less stressed when everything’s organized. And definitely make sure you eat something when you can!
9. Practice Safe Sleeping Habits
Always place your baby on their back to sleep, on a firm mattress, without pillows, blankets, or stuffed animals that could pose a suffocation risk. Keeping your baby safe while they sleep is essential to their health and well-being.
10. Have a “Dad Bag” Ready
Pack a bag for yourself when you head out with the baby. Keep essentials like diapers, wipes, snacks for you, a bottle, and maybe even a spare shirt in case of spills. A well-prepared bag can save you from a last-minute scramble.
These practical tips can make a huge difference in the daily grind of new parenthood. Keep the routine simple, stay flexible, and remember—you’ve got this!
