5 things NOT to buy for your newborn
It’s a very confusing baby world out there for new parents, it was especially for me.
I did not know the first thing about babies, what they need, and what we should buy for them.
I didn’t have much exposure to babies throughout my life. I’d see some of my friends have babies but never got too involved…to be blatantly honest…I wasn’t that interested.
But once I knew we are having a baby….things changed.
I began to get interested, wanting to learn about how to raise a baby, and what was needed to ensure this baby survives!
Even though I wanted to make sure he has everything he needs, I also knew that this is exactly what baby businesses are banking on…for me to spend too much on things I thought I need and mark up prices on things with the word “baby” in them.
So, if you are like me and want to know which baby items are actually helpful, and which ones you shouldn’t be spending extravagant amount of money on, read the below 5 things NOT to buy (and check out my top 5 things to buy here).
BOTTOM 5 - DON’T BOTHER
Fancy change table - change tables can really blow your budget if you decide to go for a high end one with some change tables as high as $3,000. There is really no reason to go for a really expensive one. At the end of the day, it is just a set of drawers with a “change table” on top of it. Once your little one starts to get bigger and more fidgety you will probably start to change them on other areas (like the floor, or on a bed).
Expensive Bassinet - you should think about this before investing too much money in a bassinet, it will most likely only be used for 3-6 months…and that’s it. We used ours for only 3 months before moving to a cot. We ended up giving away our bassinet, and it was practically brand new. So, before you decide to spend $2,000 on a Snoo bassinet, think about the value for money.
Expensive pram - prams go anywhere from $200 to $5000 for some branded ones. Don’t fall for it. Look for practicalities instead of looks and “brand” name. Important practicalities include: does it change from bassinet to seated; is it easy to fold; how heavy is it; does it have extra room; are the wheels sturdy; are you looking to take it overseas; will you be using it “off road” (i.e. in parks/trails etc). Many people I know that travel with their baby will often have to buy a second pram to ensure it fits in the overhead compartment…so if you spend $3,000 on a pram then have to spend another couple of $$ on a separate pram…..your budget can get blown out.
Expensive crib/bassinet bedding - I know you want the best for your child, I know you want to bathe them in liquid gold, give them the finest clothes and of course, let them sleep on 1000 thread Egyptian cotton bedding…I want that too. But it’s not necessary. It really isn’t worth your money. My son slept well on his $10 Kmart bed sheets and still does.
Branded clothes - same as above. I know they look cute in their mini branded clothes. With Ralph Lauren polos and Givenchy hoodies. But you don’t need to spend much on their clothes, especially in the early days. My son grew out of 99% of his clothes within 2 months. And it has been the same trend ever since. When people tell you they grow quickly, oh boy they do. I gave away literally hundreds of baby clothes to my mates. Don’t waste money on this.
BONUS tip - if people offer clothes/toys definitely take them and DONT spend thousands on clothes you’ll use only once or twice! We had some clothes we never even got to use before my little one was already too big for them!
